Magic Sauce? Yes.
Have you ever had applesauce so good that you kept thinking about it for days? To the point that you got cravings for it. I didn’t. I also swore to myself that I would never post an applesauce recipe. I thought that was silly. I figured everyone knew how to make it from scratch. I swore I would only focus all my attention on the fancy over the top recipes. Truth is.. I’m beginning to really embrace simple. I appreciate it.
My mother made these incredible sweet potato stuffed apples on Christmas day. She spiced them to perfection. She inspired me. This sauce is my replication. The flavor is outstanding.. you’ll never want to make it any other way again.
Plus, this version is low glycemic! Though of course, you can sweeten this sauce with whatever type of sugar that you like.
Orange Zested Applesauce
6 Apples Peeled, Cored and Chopped
1 TBS Lemon or Orange Juice
1/2- 3/4 Cup Water
Zest of 1 orange. (You can use just a tsp or the entire orange do this to taste)
Pinch of Sea Salt
Stevia to taste
Pinch of Nutmeg (to taste).
Prepare the apples. Place them in a saucepan with the remaining ingredients. Cover and turn heat to medium low. Let the apples cook 10-20 minutes until they are soft enough to mush. Add additional water if you like your sauce thinner.
I like to add some coconut milk to mine. It adds a really nice balance to the orange and nutmeg.
Serve warm or cold. Store in the fridge in a sealed container.

Brittany

3 full droppers? Good god woman, you like it sweet!
Seriously though, I love seeing what you do with food. We eat so much of the same stuff, but take slightly different routes, and I am definitely going to make this the next time I want some applesauce. As long as I’m watching what you make, I’ll never get bored with my food!
LOVE it sweet!! Love love love. Clearly I got over my stevia issues. I agree.. I still think about that gingery veggie dish you made when you were visiting! Mmmmm. xoxox
Looks great. How did your mom make hers?
I literally just took this off the stove. I used vanilla cream liquid stevia. Three droppers have bit of an after taste. Despite that small issue, it is indeed magic sauce. If I wasn’t in danger of burning my tongue I would gobble it right up. I also used fresh grated nutmeg and my immersion blender did wonders.
I have been sugar free for about 6 months and no longer notice the stevia aftertaste .. Hence why I like using so much. Also Nunaturals stevia has the least amount of aftertaste out of all the brands. Glad you liked it- I made some for dessert this evening too.
My girls thought it was too bitter. Will have to adjust to their taste, or maybe not. Then I can eat it all myself.
I say keep it for yourself
I think I’m going to change the directions above to say to taste without my suggested amount.
Never ever say a recipe is too simple to post, Brittany! We all want simple in our lives!
Happy New Year, dear! xoxo,

Happy New Year sweet friend! Much love to you!! Xoxo
I’ve made something similar to this before – but have your recipe on the stove now… I used Chinese 5 spice… gives it a little twist. YUMMERS….
This time I made it with about 1/2 cup of rhubarb, omitted the orange zest and added cinnamon. Last time I made it I added pears. The possibilities with this are endless.
