(Low Sugar) Autoimmune Juice Cleanse recipes!

Sometimes after a lot of bad eating..you just want to take a break and do a cleanse to get into a healthier frame of mind.

I speak from experience.. for several years I had to follow an extremely strict diet to get my hashimotos into remission- during that time my gut healed and after I was able to add back a ton of foods- including grain, sugar, dairy, soy and more.

Let me tell you- after forcing myself to be so rigid for years.. my new found food freedom made me lose almost total control. Not to mention that grain and sugar are addicting.  I was living it up! (and I have no regrets- sometimes its really important just to feel normal and eat normal!)

And then I tried to quit sugar.. Fail. I tried again, and again.. and I COULD NOT do it.  Me, the girl that once had self control better than anyone.  I finally realized I needed to do more than just quit sugar- I needed to do a gentle cleanse to get myself back on track and craving the foods I SHOULD be craving..like big salads and fresh squeezed juice. (yes, when you eat healthy regularly you crave healthy!)

So- I created 4 new juice recipes, and committed myself back to a paleo-ish diet for a few weeks.  The past week I have been guzzling 3-4 juices a day and eating mostly meat and  veggies.. and I feel.. AMAZING. You don’t realize how bloated or bogged down you are until your clothes magically start fitting better again and your energy picks up a notch.

Having Hashimotos and Hypothyroidism I have to be cautious as I am prone to  adrenal fatigue issues. Drinking straight juice for a week straight would just be too hard on my system. If you are autoimmune or have Hashimotos in particular I would caution you to tread lightly with the extreme juice cleanses.  Everyone is different, for me lots of juice + light meat and veggie meals did the trick. I feel great and I’ve lost most of my interest in sugar. (Give me another week and I wont care about it at all )

Wether going on a juice cleanse or just looking to incorporate some fresh juice into your diet these recipes will work for you. And the best part- they taste SO good!!  I can’t deal with the green juices at most juice bars..they make me gag. I expect what I’m drinking to taste really good.. So I put in the time to make sure these recipes were extra tasty.   Usually I hate beets and swiss chard in juice.. So I found ways to 100% hide their flavor. Most importantly (to me anyways) the juices have a fantastic color. Ugly juice is unappetizing.

Each one of these recipes makes roughly 20 ounces of juice (this amount will range depending on your juicer)

Morning Glory

  • 2 1/2 cups of baby carrots (or chopped carrots)
  • 1 small beet
  • 8-10 red swiss chard stalks (I reserve the leaves for another recipe_
  • 1 grapefruit peeled (or lemon juice to taste)
  • Nunaturals Stevia to taste to sweeten.

Lemon & Ginger Green Cleanser

  • Swiss chard leaves from 1 bunch.
  • 1 small bunch of celery
  • 1 heaping handful of baby spinach
  • beet greens (from one bunch of beets)- optional.
  • 1/8 cup of lemon juice.
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger
  • Nunaturals Stevia to taste.

Mojito Cleanser

  • 1 extra large cucumber
  • 3 heaping handfulls of baby spinach
  • 1/2 of a small bunch of celery.
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Mint Leaves
  • 2 Tbs of Lime (or lemon) Juice
  • Nunaturals Stevia to taste.

Fall in a Glass

  •  3 cups of baby carrots (or 3 cups of regular carrots chopped)
  • 3 small sweet potatoes (skin and all- just wash and slice them)
  • 1 small beet
  • 1 inch of fresh ginger
  • A dash of cinnamon (to taste)

Cheers to getting back on track!

These ARE very pretty. Just wondering what equipment is needed to make these. I’m thinking the average blender or food processor wouldn’t work. I have no space for another appliance!:)

I use to have a juicer, but I found it such a pain to clean & then I struggled with throwing out all that fiber. So, I came up with an alternative. I have a vitamix, but I have done this in my old waring as well. I blend the veggies & fruit (carrots, spinach, cucumber, broccoli, apples, celery, beets). Everything that I use to put in my juicer, I put in my blender. I blend with just enough water at first to get things moving. Then I let it rip for a solid minute or so until everything is super smooth. I then add about 4 cups of water to thin things down. It is a tad thicker than juice, since the pulp is in there, but I don’t mind. If its too thick, I just add more water. The important step is to blend to oblivion with a small amount of liquid at first. Another important factor is the order you put things in the blender. This is my morning smoothy as follows & I put things in descending order:
1/2 cup water
2 cups spinach
1/2 cup cucumber chunks
1 cup watermelon chunks
1/4 cup pineapple chunks or 1/2 ripe banana
1/2 cup carrot chunks
Puree, add more water slowly if needed to get it moving. Blend for 1-2 minutes. Then add 4 cups water.

I can’t tell you how true your statement was about just eating meats, veggies & fresh juices. I did this about 2-3 months ago and WHAM!!! there went my bloated belly. My belly was actually F.L.A.T., flat. My sugar/carb cravings went by the wayside as well. And then I went on vacation ….SO, needless to say, I went to the whole foods store today and got me some good healthy stuff to juice & went to a real dairy farm, got some wholesome beef bones (no antibiotics, no other crap) … I love my bone broth. I add onions, garlic, turmeric, ginger, pepper, celery, acv & whatever I have on hand. I typically get 6-8 qts from approx 3# of bones. I cook a batch for 24 hrs, and then twice more. The turmeric totally helps with my arthritis…. luv your site <3

Im unsure of why there is a need for any sweetener in these juices. Beets and carrots are sweetening enough. Also, baby carrots are not really carrots, why not just use whole carrots? I just put whole carrots through the juicer. If I am mistaken, please advise. Just wondering the logic. Thanks for the recipes though. I can modify them to meet me needs.

Simply because the added stevia tasted absolutely delicious to me!

Brittany! I love these recipes. It seems to me that all bloggers must be going through a juice craze right now, because I’ve been obsessed with them the last month, and I’ve seen so many other bloggers like yourself posting recipes too! We must ALL be in need of cleansing and juice is THE BEST way to do that. I just feel like I could conquer the world with my green juice!:):) These recipes are great! I make one that’s a mix of all these somewhat, and use lemon, ginger, cucumber, beet, carrot, romaine and parsley. It is SO good. With the beet and carrot I don’t even feel the need to add the stevia, but if my sweet tooth won’t leave me alone, a dash always does the trick!:) LOVE these recipes- thanks so much!!! You’re an inspiration!!

You have inspired me. I bought a juicer today. On the same day I got “glutened” at a work cake fundraiser (at which I made your Flourless Crack Brownies (albeit modified) and they were they only thing that got snapped up in entirety!!! Well done you!) and now I know the only thing I feel safe having for a few days would be veggie juices… so the commitment has been made! Can’t wait for it to arrive! xo

I was going to just do a 30 to 60 day juice cleans. I just found out my thyroid went from 3.2 to .95 and if it get lower I have to go on medication. I am also having some adrenal problems. I was hoping a juice cleans would work. You said that ” I have to be cautious as I am prone to adrenal fatigue issues.” How will I know if this is me. I did juicing for morning and lunch then had a small dinner mostly salad, sunflower seeds and shrimp. I felt better so, I thought juice 90% adding in , brazil nuts and sunflower seeds for snacks through the day. I know kale is a cruciferous vegetable which has isothyocyanates and can block the intake to your thyroid, so I am avoiding those! My smoothies are now spinach, red leaf lettuce, 1/4 cup pineapple, 1/4 apple, 1/2 banana, mint, a dash of turmeric and a teaspoon of fresh ground cinnamon. I have a Vita-mix but just got a Breville Juice Fountain Plus. I know juice is better then smoothies for absorption reasons. Is there any advice you can give me from your journey? Thank you four your time, Laura
